The Centre was founded in the academic year 1971-72 as the Centre for Translation Projects, the brainchild of the late Mr Stephen Soong. Work in the early years centred on establishing a quality publishing base for Chinese literature in English translation, with the successful launch of the journal Renditions in 1973 and Renditions Books in 1976. The reputation and long-term viability of these now ensured, staff turned their energies to research activities in Chinese literature, translation studies and comparative literature. A further restructuring in 1983 saw research activities strengthened and focused on Chinese literature and translation studies. The present name of Research Centre for Translation (RCT) was adopted at this time. |
The mid to late 1980s, a period of remarkable literary creativity in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, inspired a growth of translating and publishing activity at the Centre. The Renditions Paperback series was launched in 1986, and often writers stayed at the Centre to aid in the translations. |
In the 1990s emphasis has shifted more towards translation research, especially in its historical and cultural contexts in China.The Translation Studies Research Series, initiated at RCT, represents some of the Centre's research results in this area. |
